He's one of the funniest blokes on the box, which is probably why TEN has snaffled Shaun Micallef to host a new panel show set to air later this year. Shaun Micallef will host TEN's MyGen. Tentatively titled MyGen, the show will bring together generations X, Y and Baby Boomers to tackle questions on pop culture in its attempt to decide who knows more.
Hosting the show on TEN means that Micallef is expected to appear on two networks at the same time. He will continue with Newstopia on SBS, the show that shoots down all current affairs and newsmakers with satirical precision.
Known for his biting wit, Micallef has done the rounds of Aussie networks, but on TEN he is best known for his hilarious stints on Thank God You're Here.
"I really like Channel TEN, I'm very pleased about being within easy stealing distance of their programming library," Micallef said.
Of his role hosting MyGen Micallef said, "Gen Y's are so irritating … and terrifying. Somebody needs to tell them that nobody likes an over-achiever and it may as well be me."
TEN programmer David Mott said, "Micallef is one of Australia's most liked and accomplished on-air personalities and a skilled developer and writer -- his contribution to the TEN production team and on-air presence is a real coup for the network.
"MyGen is the freshest new format we have seen in recent years and we anticipate it will be a hit with Australian audiences in 2009."
The concept was developed for TEN by Granada Productions.

Yeah, I sort of feel sceptical as well. Shaun's just not that mainstream game-show host sort of guy.

Yeah, but I think he can play that kind of cheezy guy with a bit of a wink, which is all I'm hoping for here. He'll probably only say a bit at the start, crack a gag after they come back from each break, and then stand there while the far, far less funny team captains waffle on forever.
Considering it seems as if Shaun will give anything a go at least once, a year spent hosting a gameshow part time is a small price to pay (and might even be fun to watch) if it means Ten'll let him do his own show somewhere along the line.

yeah, that's what i'm really hoping for. Although it probably would have been good to build up a good relationship with SBS; so maybe a micallef program-esque show would be the result. Im thinking whatever happens with ten may end up the way of micallef tonight. Ten want another rove type personality to do other shows as well (eg fifth grader; see any similarities??)

Even worse than the thought that he might be drop-punted out the door before the show is given a decent run, is the thought that this might just be boring television. Not even bad, just bland. But hey! I like to think positive! And lucky for me I'm of his opposite sex, so the draw to him involves, ah... many different things. Often, when my mind turns to Boeing Boeing, it stays on the image of him pulling on his socks... Oh, THAT's what I should've given up for Lent!

Did he not complete the task of dressing himself in the very opening scene, the night you were there?
I paid close attention ;D

"HERE'S the first cast shot of Channel Ten's new inter-generational quiz show, Talkin' 'Bout My Generation, which hopes to hit a nerve across all demographics. Hosted by funnyman Shaun Micallef, it pits three generations - baby-boomers, Generation X and Gen Y - against one another in a panel-style battle of wits. Each week, three regular team captains - Amanda Keller and comedians Charlie Pickering and Josh Thomas - will be joined by celebrity guests from the three generations to field questions on film, television, news and current affairs, fads, advertising, sport and more, in a bid to find out which generation really does rule the family roost. The show promises a firm focus on funny, with points awarded not only for correct answers, but also entertaining gags and spontaneous performances. Filming begins on April 15, and the show will be seen mid-year." www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,25289468-5009160,00.html

A friend of mine in the TV writing biz spoke to one S. Micallef today about Your Gen (which is why I'm posting this here) - I'm not to cut his lunch by discussing Your Gen too much before his story sees print, but he did also ask a couple of questions I'd slipped him to ask and got the following replies:
A): Teacher Boy is in "development hell" - it's all good to go, they just need funding. B): He'd like to release Welcher & Welcher on DVD and Shock would too, but it's not looking good as there's right issues going on. C): Couldn't get a firm answer on what else he might have going on at Ten - not that he wouldn't answer, but the answer went off in another direction. D): Newstopia might still come back - SBS wanted to turn it into a live news update thing before Top Gear, but he wasn't all that keen on that idea, as it would take it too close to Colbert / The Daily Show and that's not the kind of thing he does. E): Supposedly Matt Saville (Aussie director behind the good but seen by no-one film Noise) just handed him a script with a role written just for him. F): He also pointed out that "all my films have been flops". Say it ain't so! G): He's basing his Your Gen host work (at least slightly, in approach if not tone) on Groucho Marx from You Bet Your Life, as he didn't want to be a cheesy game show host, nor did he want to host it "ironically". H): No word either way on a Newstopia DVD.
I think that's all the good stuff - mousePATROL was also discussed at length but the tape ran out! Hopefully I'll find out the details there in the next day or two. The Green Guide also had a reporter there, so expect a big article on Shaun from them in the next week or so as well.

Great stuff, schoolyards. Really interesting stuff. I can see why he said no to that re-dux of Newstopia.

Cool scoop.
By newstopia being live do you think he meant in front of an audience or live to air? Daily show/colbert report are in front of an audience so surely thats what he meant.
Very interesting.....

I *think* it was both live to air and live in front of an audience... the audience was definitely going to be involved, and I *think* the idea was to go live to keep it topical.
I *think*...
